6th Asian Winter games closes, China tops medal table

Sunday has seen the closing ceremony of the sixth Asian Winter Games. Over the last week, many of Asia¡¯s best athletes gathered in Changchun to vie for 141 medals.
The closing ceremony began with a splash. For Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, it was their first time to participate in the Asian Winter Games. There were more countries represented, athletes and audiences than in previous games.
Han Xiaopeng was the flag bearer for China. China won 19 golds and 61 medals, and tops the medal table. Next was Japan, with 13 golds and 36 medals in total. South Korea came in third with 9 golds and 33 medals.
Chinese premier Wen Jiabao announced the close of the games. Then China presented the Olympic Council of Asia flag to the next Asian Winter Games host country-Kazahkastan.
A four-part evening gala followed. It was meant to sum up Asian unity and the Spring Festival.
The sixth Asian Winter Games was the biggest international sporting event before the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
